UCLA Research and Innovation Blueprint

UCLA Research Park

Overview

This initiative aims to create a more integrated and collaborative innovation ecosystem across Southern California and beyond. Our work will strengthen UCLA’s ability to turn ideas into impact while diversifying streams of revenue.

This initiative aligns with the third goal of our strategic plan: Enhance our research and creative activities.

Goals

  • Establish and scale the UCLA Research Park as a premier hub for transformative research, focusing initially on quantum science and immunology.
  • Strengthen industry partnerships to accelerate technology transfer, intellectual property development and sponsored research funding.

Expected Outcomes

  • A dynamic physical and intellectual hub – anchored by UCLA Research Park – that unites university scholars with industry, government and academic partners to drive multidisciplinary breakthroughs.
  • A vibrant innovation ecosystem that accelerates the translation of discoveries from the laboratory directly to the marketplace.
  • Transformative intellectual and economic impact that drives growth for UCLA, the Los Angeles community and California.
  • Invigorated community and industry partnerships rooted in our shared neighborhoods and extending to state, national and global stakeholders.

Progress in Motion

  • Advancing the California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy (CIII) through active director recruitment, facility planning and progressing through the required California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) environmental reviews.
  • Developing buildout plans for the Quantum Innovation Hub (QIH) while securing temporary campus spaces to immediately welcome and house interested industry partners.
  • Streamlining industry partnerships through Master Agreements and creating viable structures for restricted research within the UC system.
  • Establishing a university-wide Taskforce on AI in Research to develop practical guidelines, share knowledge and ensure responsible artificial intelligence adoption across all disciplines.

“The UCLA Research and Innovation Blueprint is about accelerating the journey from fundamental discovery to real-world impact. By creating dynamic spaces like the UCLA Research Park and deepening our industry partnerships, we are empowering our researchers to translate their multidisciplinary breakthroughs into the scalable solutions our society urgently needs.” –Roger Wakimoto, Vice Chancellor for Research

Meet the Leads

  • Roger Wakimoto – Vice Chancellor for Research
  • Alissa Park – Ronald and Valerie Sugar Dean of the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering
  • Miguel Garcia-Garibay – Dean, Division of Physical Sciences
  • Steve Dubinett – Dean, DGSOM and Associate Vice Chancellor for Research, UCLA
  • John C. Mazziotta – CEO & Vice Chancellor of UCLA Health

Meets Goal 3: Enhance our research and creative activities

UCLA aspires to be the leading public university for cutting-edge research and creative activities. While our university is home to extremely talented researchers, scholars, experts, artists and creators, changes to our research infrastructure are needed to make it easier for those individuals to secure and maintain funding for their work, manage their projects, and translate their discoveries into practical applications. A focus on engaged scholarship and new connections to Los Angeles will also enable us to deepen the impact of UCLA research and creative activities.
